I’ve transferred my allegiance from the Giants to the Lions for the duration of the NFL season. Yes, I am a football fan and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I have legit credentials, too. I was QB 2 on an undefeated, untied, unscored upon football team. (Okay, it was the JV2s, and I played a total of about two series on offense during the season. But still, I was a player.)
So, in transferring my rooting interest, I do give a lot of consideration to the team that wins my support—it’s history, it’s karma, and it’s “story” as we enter the postseason.
Detroit’s got a Good Story
A great story, actually. The team was bad. Now it’s gotten pretty good. And how did that happen, you ask.
There’s one reason that has led to a lot of other reasons. A woman, Sheila Ford Hamp, became the principal owner of the team. I read a great story about her and the rebuild of the Lions, but I couldn’t find it. But here is a link to a similar piece that gives a little of the background.
And for those in the throes of the third or fourth or whatever losing season, I will offer one bit of advice.
You want your team to get better.
Put a woman in charge.
