Dear All,
In February, just before Valentine’s Day, Austin Kleon had a “Words of Love” posting on his subscribers’ Substack. I can’t share the post, but (without any permission) I’m sharing the image he put with it—a blackout poem.
I liked the whole thing—the poem, message, et. al.
(If you don’t subscribe to Kleon’s free Friday newsletter, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It is always interesting and frequently inspiring. Click here for a preview and subscription info.)
And I offered a “comment” — which was this:
Over the Hills
Over the hills I went one day
Dreaming of myself and you
And the springtime of years
Since first we met
And all that we've been through
May I not, with delight
Still dream of the years
Of the summer and fall to be
And the many, many verses
Still to be sung
In the ballad of you and me
-- Pete Seeger
A Sleep Song and a Wedding Song and . . .
Over the Hills was a second of two lullabies that I sang for my son from the time he was an infant until he was nearly six years old. If I missed singing the lullabies more than ten times, I would be very surprised. So I have sung that little song way more than a thousand times and close to two thousand.
And I sang it to Jane at out wedding.
A great song. A great songwriter, Pete was. One of the items on my “to write” list is a fan letter to him. Maybe soon.
Anon.
